Replica of Paul Revere’s Boston Massacre Engraving

Join us this Saturday, June 19th for a slide presentation by Andy Volpe on his recently completed replica engraving of Paul Revere’s Boston Massacre, which he painstakingly researched and replicated for the 250th anniversary of the Massacre last March.

In his presentation, Andy will discuss how he went about researching and creating his exact-size replica, using the very same techniques that Revere himself used, right down to the way Revere copied Henry Pelham’s print. Andy will also discuss a brief history of the many replicas and copies of Revere’s print since 1770, and a history of the original copperplate, which has its own unique story and place in history.

Andy is making available an exclusive, limited edition print of his replica, uniquely hand-painted, combining elements of the original, colored Boston Massacre print in the American Antiquarian Society, a painted version of Henry Pelham’s print, and using the most recent research and reconstruction of the 29th Regiment of Foot uniforms, as seen during the 250th commemorative event. This unique edition will only be available at the Museum of Printing gift shop.

Andy will present at 11:30 am and at 2:00 pm. His lecture is free with Museum admission.

Andy Volpe is an Artist, Printer, and Living History Presenter in Worcester, Massachusetts. He has been involved with the Museum of Printing since 2010, where he’s demonstrated “Old Master” Intaglio printing during Museum Open House events, and is currently developing a series of lectures at the Museum looking at various printing topics, notably on Intaglio printing, printing in Early Colonial America, and more. Since around 2011 he has worked replicating the prints of Paul Revere for the Printing Office of Edes & Gill in Faneuil Hall Boston, which demonstrates and replicates Letterpress and Engraving printing as practiced in Colonial Boston in the 1760s to 1780s, including historically important prints and documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitutional Convention. Andy hand-engraves and hand-prints replicas not only of Paul Revere’s works but also of other notable 18th century intaglio print artists. Andy also gives Living History presentations with the Higgins Armory Collection at Worcester Art Museum.
