LECTURES

(All lectures are free for first half of the year.)

Thursday evenings, 7pm to 8pm

April 8 Sam Ellenport, Harcourt Bindery, Charlestown, MA
“A Bookbinding Anomaly: Linked Spine Bindings” • Register for lecture

This talk traces a fascinating design path in which binders and designers consider the spines or backs of books that are in sets as a rectangular canvas. The decoration of this rectangle includes design work that spans more than one book, presenting an image or artistic pattern. These decorated books are rarely seen but will be in this illustrated talk. Sam is a member of the Museum of Printing, and a master binder who has been at the Harcourt Bindery since 1970. He has written about the history of binding, and lectures on bookbinding.

May 13 Kenneth Gloss, R.N.G.*, Brattle Bookshop, Boston, MA
“A Book, a Story, and a Smile for Everyone” • Register for lecture

This discussion will cover collecting of old books for their bindings, how to identify a collectable binding type, and what to look for to build your collection. Ken will take questions about old books you bring with you and do short, on-the-spot appraisals during the evening. If you want to know the authenticity, value, or scarcity of a beloved volumes is, bring it to the Museum for this lecture/discussion led by the proprietor of the Brattle Street Bookshop in Boston.
