Paste Paper Workshop

Friday, May 22, 2009
At the Museum of Printing, North Andover, MA
10am – 3pm

Paste paper is one of the earliest forms of creating decorated paper, dating back to the 16th century when it was widely used for book covers and end papers.  This art form remains as simple today as it was 600 years ago and the outcome is just as mystical.

Specially-prepared paste is colored with paint and brushed onto wet paper. While the paper is still wet, designs are combed, pressed, or scraped into the surface using rollers, traditional and custom texture tools and found objects. Intricate designs are formed and limited only by imagination.
Frequently referred to as “finger painting for adults,” the process of making paste paper is playful and spontaneous and every sheet created is a unique one-of-a-kind piece. Making paste paper is a wonderful process where everyone can access their creative spirit and feel successful. The process encourages exploration, invention, and creativity. Students should be prepared to have fun, be surprised, and make lots of paper to use later in subsequent projects, such as a book cover or as a background layer for a relief print, silkscreen or letterpress printing, card making or collage. Workshop includes making up to 8 sheets of large paper, paste recipes, and directions. All skill levels welcome. Limited to 10 people.

Everyone should bring lunch and wear work clothes.

Fee: $30 for members, $40 for non-members

The Letterpress Guild of New England will be hosting the 6th Annual Printing Arts Fair on Father’s Day, June 21, 2009 at the Museum of Printing located at 800 Massachusetts Avenue in North Andover, Massachusetts just across from the town common. The Fair is free to the public and runs from 10am to 4pm. Co-sponsored by the Letterpress Guild of New England and the Museum of Printing, it’s the perfect time to learn about the book arts and printing, with papermaking and bookbinding artisans demonstrating their craft. Also on hand are stone lithography, intaglio and letterpress printing demonstrations. And for the first time the fair will present Steamroller Printing in honor of the 100th anniversary of the beloved Vandercook Proof Press.

On display in the big tent and upstairs in the Museum are artwork, stationery, prints, books, decorative papers, crafts, posters, type and letterpress printing equipment from such vendors as Albertine Press, B Designs, Brookfield Paperworks, Carta Inc., Sea Dog Press, May Day Studio, Swamp Press, Sun Hill Press, and Zoetropa. The Museum has a fantastic selection of letterpress items for sale for those wanting to try their hand at printing. Vendors will also be donating items to the raffle that benefits the Museum.
