Lecture: Paul Shaw on Revival Type

SUNDAY, June 2nd at 1 p.m.

Noted type historian Paul Shaw will examine the many degrees and kinds of type revivals and discuss the differing challenges that contemporary type designers face in creating a revival. The presentation is based on the book Revival Type: Digital Typefaces Inspired by the Past (Yale University Press, 2017) by Paul Shaw in collaboration with Abby Goldstein.

Revival Type

The book is a look at nearly one hundred digital fonts and the lettering or metal typefaces they are based on. Among the typefaces he will highlight are: Trajan, Adobe Garamond, Big Caslon, ITC Bodoni, Classic Grotesque, Gill Sans, Palatino, Neue Grotesk (aka Helvetica), and Metro Nova.

Paul suffered major injuries in a 2018 attack in front of the New York Library. A funding campaign has helped to cover his expenses and his recovery has been remarkable. He confirms that he will keep his schedule and continue to educate and elucidate about the rich history of typography.

Admission is free for members and all donations will be given to Paul to help with his recovery.
