Dori Boone and the Museum of Printing Partner on the Learning Letterpress Series of Instructional Videos

In this time of social distancing, education is more important than ever. As part of our mission to preserve the rich history of the graphic arts, the Museum of Printing is dedicated to supporting the production of free content to advance letterpress education. We are proud to announce that we have teamed up with Dori Boone to curate an ongoing series of instructional videos featuring print aficionados from around the world explaining and demonstrating the basics of letterpress printing and maintenance. It is called Learning Letterpress.

A great way to stay up to date on Learning Letterpress content is to like the Learning Letterpress Facebook page. See https://facebook.com/learningletterpress. If you are interested in hosting a Learning Letterpress workshop, please email Dori at .

About Dori Boone

Dori Boone came to letterpress printing from a love of paper and the realization that it can be made even more beautiful with letterpress. Following an introduction to printing from friends with presses, Dori began looking for a press that was approachable and she could easily find replacement parts for. She acquired her first press, a 3×5 Kelsey platen, in February 2020, and her second press, a 6×10 Kelsey, shortly after. Dori lives in Houston adjacent to an old rail line, thus Side Track Press was born. Dori describes Side Track Press as her passion project and something that lets her get “outta my head and into a creative space.”

As she began to get acquainted with her presses, Dori started looking online for solutions to various questions and issues (because hands on learning was not an option with the rise of Covid-19.) Dori started asking questions on the Facebook group “Letterpress” and found the community very willing to help. Facetime calls and one-on-one Zoom chats led to group calls and morphed into recording the sessions and making them available on YouTube.

The Learning Letterpress Facebook page hosts a calendar of future Zoom Events. Events take the form of either printmaker-led, subject-specific workshops or freeform conversations with a printmaker called The Happiest Hour. The Learning Letterpress YouTube channel hosts recorded Zoom sessions, which are typically posted a few days following the live event.
